These 600 Stereographs Reveal the Beginnings of San Antonio! See Them This Weekend

The Briscoe Western Art Museum, located on the banks of the historic San Antonio River Walk, brings to life the vibrant culture and heritage of the Western United States. This fall, the museum presents selections from its collection of nearly 600 stereographs of the city of San Antonio from the 1860s to 1930s in its exhibition "Destino San Antonio.” Don’t miss it on Sunday, September 30th!

This experiential exhibition is inspired by the structure of the stereograph - a picture composed of two superposed images that give a three-dimensional effect when viewed with a stereoscope or special glasses. Artist and guest curator Ann Wallace integrates maps, video, personal accounts, and arcade-style 3-D viewers to explore a period of profound transition after the Civil War until the final days of the great Texas “frontier.”

The Briscoe Western Art Museum’s permanent collection presents art and artifacts from across the history and cultures of the American West. Over five centuries, from the Spanish conquest to the present day, the collections of the Briscoe tell the story of the West in all its drama. It is a story of global dimension, played out in a timeless landscape. It is a story that continues today.

Destino San Antonio will feature a robust slate of programming, including tours, gallery talks, workshops, roundtable discussions, and a “Voices of the West: Distinguished Lecture”. Admission to the museum and exhibition is $10 for adults. Discounted prices are available for seniors, children, museum members, and active military.
